Port Lavaca is a beautiful city along the Gulf Coast that’s about a 30-minute drive from Victoria. It was referred to simply as Lavaca when it was originally founded in 1840. Once Calhoun County formed in 1846, the city became the county seat, and it eventually changed its name to Port Lavaca. Today, the city has numerous historical markers and the Calhoun County Museum, which is filled with artifacts from the Civil War area and other time periods.
Things to Do
If you have the chance, it’s well worth exploring Port Lavaca and checking out its museum and other spots. The remains of the 1858 Half Moon Reef Lighthouse are fascinating to see and now include another lovely museum. As you make your way around the city, you should also keep an eye out for different historical murals and snap a photo of them.
On a sunny afternoon, the city has some beautiful seaside areas where you can relax by the water, surf the waves or go fishing. Some of our favorite beaches include Magnolia Beach, Lighthouse Beach and Alamo Beach. Lavaca Bay is also ideal if you enjoy saltwater fishing since it is filled with snapper, speckled trout and redfish.
If you’re more interested in animals above the surface, you can spend the day bird watching at the Magic Ridge bird sanctuary, Guadalupe Delta Wildlife Management Area or Powderhorn Lake. Port Lavaca is a part of the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail, so you can expect to see a wide variety of species.
