Archeological discoveries in the area indicate that Paleo-American people likely lived in this area. In more modern times, the Karankawa Tribe was the largest native populations. They met the first European explorers in the area in the early 1500s. However, the tribe left the area by the mid-1860s.
Today, Port Lavaca is the county seat of Calhoun County. Many residents are employed in the fishing industry at the port. There are several large manufacturing facilities in the area including DuPont, Alcoa, and Formosa Plastics.
Things To Do
Half Moon Reef Lighthouse. The Halfmoon Reef Lighthouse is the oldest surviving wooden lighthouse in Texas. The six-sided building was constructed in the late 1850s. It is a popular historical location.
Lighthouse Beach. Whether you are looking for a place to park your RV or just want to spend a day looking at the water, Lighthouse Beach is an excellent choice. Pack a picnic and spend an afternoon letting the kids play in the sand and water.
La Salle Monument. Learn more about Port Lavaca’s early history with a visit to this monument. It is a great place to stop for some pictures.
Calhoun County Museum. It may not look like much from the outside but come inside and see numerous historical artifacts. The museum is free to the public and is open Tuesday through Saturday.
Twin Dolphins Theater. If you want to go to the movies, but don’t like spending a fortune, this small theater may be what you need. It has affordable pricing for both tickets and concessions.
